Moons and Rings Moons Uranus has 15 rocky, ice-covered moons. Most of the moons are named after characters in Shakespeare's plays. Titania, Oberon, Umbriel, Ariel, and Miranda are the five largest moons. They were discovered by astronomers on Earth. Puck, Portia, Juliet, Belinda, Cressida, Rosalind, Desdemona, Bianca, Ophelia, and Cordelia were all discovered in 1986. They were discovered when the Voyager 2 space probe flew by the planet. The ten smaller moons range from about 19 to 93 miles (32 to 153 km) in diameter. All of the small moons orbit inside the paths of the five larger moons.
